The Top Trends in Doughnuts

The Top Trends in Doughnuts

28th April 2025

Social media is leading the way when it comes to new product development. In such a digital age, ‘Instagrammable’ food is still popular encouraging both bakeries and retailers to up their game when it comes to making creations that are as artistic and visually appealing as they are delicious.

Trending Flavours

When looking at key flavours – there’s been a surge in bold, inventive and creative flavours – almost anything goes at the moment! Everyone is talking about pistachio – of course. Given the popularity of Dubai Chocolate too, Deliveroo’s top trending dish of 2024[i], there’s scope for bakers and manufacturers to experiment and recreate this trending combo in doughnut form.

The classic fillings of jam and custard will always be perennially popular, and with ‘treating themselves’ being a leading reason for UK consumers to eat or drink out of home[ii], traditional ‘brown flavours’ like chocolate, caramel and toffee will be too. Excitingly there has been an influx of decadent and indulgent offerings across the market, such as a Crème Brulé inspired doughnut. Delicious!

Bakers are also looking back and taking inspiration from classic and nostalgic dessert flavours, such as Tiramisu and Apple Crumble.

Crunch

A top trend predicted for this year also comes in the form of texture – crunch![iii] Sensory stimulation is growing in popularity, in part thanks to the rise of TikTok users creating ASMR[iv]content – so we’d expect to see more topped doughnuts that tap into this! Operators can combine multiple trends by using chopped pistachio – or add a crunchy crumble topping to the doughnut for both a flavoursome, and texture-packed bite!

In summary, there’s a fantastic opportunity to experiment and get creative!

[iv] ASMR stands for Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response – a calming, pleasurable feeling often triggered by gentle sounds like the soft crunch of food. For many, watching or listening to food being prepared and eaten can create a relaxing sensory experience.
